Why we don't clone voices or faces

October 14, 2026 · Safety

This week we did something unusual for a young product: we removed working features. OnePress could clone a face from uploaded footage, clone a voice from an audio sample, and lip-sync any face to any script. All three now return "disabled" at the tool level — they cannot be invoked at all.

The reason is structural, not stylistic. Put those three tools together and you get a complete pipeline for making a real person appear to say things they never said. A "describe your avatar" field and a checkbox saying "I have consent" is not a consent mechanism — it's a formality. We know the difference because we had exactly that, and it wasn't enough.

There's also a hard external constraint: our payment processor's acceptable-use policy explicitly prohibits face-swap, deepfake and face-manipulation tools. Even a well-intentioned implementation would sit on the wrong side of that line.

What we kept

Digital presenters are still here — but only from a licensed, authorized catalog. You can generate a video where a professional presenter reads your script; you just can't make it be a specific real person. Same for audio: synthesized and curated voices, yes; cloned voices, no.

We went one step further after publishing this policy: no real-person photos can enter the generation pipeline at all. Uploads are screened and real-person images are refused at the door; reference images for image and video generation are whitelist-only — screened uploads or files our own models produced. If your creative needs a person, the supported path is a virtual model: generate one, then reuse that same file for consistent character across a whole campaign.

What would make us reconsider

Cloning comes back only with real consent infrastructure: content moderation on uploaded footage, a live consent video where the person reads a randomized phrase we generate, and a provider-side compliance review. Until a system can prove the person agreed, the feature stays off.

If you build products in this space, we think this trade is worth it: a small loss of demo sizzle for not being in the deepfake business. Questions or disagreement welcome at our support page.
